RE: Camping near blue ridge pky

Stop at Mount Airy, NC. Close to the parkway near the NC/VA border. you can get off the parkway at Fancy Gap, VA and go south to Mount Airy. There is a campground there called Mayberry Campground that is a super nice place with the nicest people running the campground. It is new opened sometime last fall. No real amenities but a top notch place. The owner has spent many years in planning and creating the place. Check out the reviews at www.rvparkreviews for the feedback. Mount Airy is the hometown of Andy Griffith and there are many references of the area in the old Andy Griffith Show programs. Go to lunch at The Snappy Lunch and get the pork chop sandwich. Pilot Mountain State Park is a short drive away and you can take the shike around Pilot Mountain for some spectacular scenery.

RE: Whose insurance?

The trailer is covered for liability only while it is being towed. There is no collision coverage that transfers from the tow vehicle to the trailer. You have to have a policy on the 5er to have any collision or comprehensive coverage. If you hit something or someone the liability coverage on the tow vehicle will cover the damages to the other property but there will be no coverage to repair the trailer being towed.

RE: Niagara Falls- Where to stay? Update!!

Pulled into Four Mile Creek this evening. What a great place. Wonderful grassy LARGE SPACES. Got set up bought passes to the falls for tomorrow and caught the sunset on Lake Ontario. Could see the Toronto skyline across the lake as well. Will probably spent the whole day at the falls tomorrow and catch the fireworks tomorrow night.

RE: Niagara Falls to Detroit via Canada?

Found out that we need birth certificates for crossing the border. Those are back home in Texas so I guess we will just look at Canada from the good ol' US side.

Niagara Falls- Where to stay? Update!!

Visiting the Falls next weekend. Where is a good place to stay with a 38' 5er? Is there parking for the truck and 5er at the falls for just doing a drive by as we go through the area?

Niagara Falls to Detroit via Canada?

What is involved going thru Canada without having passports (or is that possible any more) and do you need special insurance like is needed for Mexico?. Would it be better to just walk across at Niagara Falls? Or is there really anything to see across that streach that would make it worth the trouble. Just thinking that since we would be that close we at least want to set our feet in Canada to say we were there once.

RE: Wind Deflector on cab of truck

I have been looking at the Aeroshield that Camping World has on sale for $299.00. If it helped the fuel mileage 1-2 MPG which it claims that would be 10 to 20%. Should see a return on the investment pretty quick at close to $5.00 a gallon fuel. After a little more research and maybe if I can get a look at one I might give one a try.

RE: Under the 5er

I was checking out the brakes and noticed that the spring hangers on the equalizer between the axles are almost worn out. Both hangers on only one side wearing. The top bolt holes are almost worn through. Getting that fixed tomorrow. Hate to think about the end result if one had failed.

Replacement Awning Fabric

The awning on the 5er is getting hard and brittle needs to be replaced. It is starting to separate and allows water to get inside the fabric causing large bubbles that I had to pncnture a hole in to let the water drain out. Does anyone know a good place to order replacement fabric? It is an A & E brand awning and is 20' long.

RE: air bags

I installed airbags on my Dodge and found that it helped the ride quality greatly. They raised the rear of the truck off the overload springs and stopped the bottoming out on the bumpstops on the concrete roads. Definately worth the expense. When not towing I reduce the air to 5 LBS as recommended in the instructions and the ride seems no different than it was originally.

RE: Alko axles - how good are the current ones

My '04 had the bad axles and when I called them about it they sent replacements to a dealer in the area I was in at the time and they changed them out and then also sent 4 replacement tires and reimbursed me for the mounting charge for the new tires. This was in May '06. The replacement axles must be fine now as the tires show no signs of uneven wear after around 10,000 or so miles.

RE: Firestone air bag fittings

Has any one experienced an air bag failure? To level my trruck and get the best ride quality I run mine at 55# of air when loaded. I hit a pothole on one of the wonderful concrete interstates in Kentucky and blew out one of the airbags. I ordered them through JC Whitney and installed them in Feb. They are trying to get me a replacement but stated they are backordered and not available from Firestone until May 12th. I will be calling Firestone tomorrow to voice my displeasure with their product availablity. Mine are hooked up with the individual airlines so I at least had air in one. Sure can tell the difference in the ride without it.

RE: Steadying Parked 5th Wheel

I also put a screw type stablizer under the frame on each side just forward of the wheels. These help take out the bounce and flex in the center wheel and spring area.

RE: Charlotte, NC area Parks

But ain't we already past 3-3 to 3-8?
You're right I should have typed 4-3 to 4-8. Time to change months already. Seems I just barely get the last one torn off and it is time to do it all over again.

RE: Fifth Airborne King Pin Box-Do You Like It?

I also bought one at Camping World. Install was easy and made a huge difference in the ride quality. Definately worth the money in my opinion. Takes care of the bouncing and the chucking.

RE: Flat Panel TV

I used 3/4 inch plywood and painted the front side black. I measured the mounting holes on the back of the TV where you normally would mount a mounting bracket, and drilled holes in the plywood for the screws, and mounted the TV directly to the plywood. I had to buy longer screws. I used a continous hinge and screwed it into the side of the cabinet stile. I did drill 5 or 6 3/4" holes at the far end of the plywood and inserted small pieces of oak dowels to hold the screws in the plywood. I put a small sliding latch on the bottom corner to hold it closed. Send me a PM if you would like further details or more photos.

RE: campgrounds atlanta georgia

We stayed at Brookwood last October. It is in Marietta and a short drive to Atlanta. Have a lot of sites that were no very level but have 50 amp service, free wifi, and cable tv. So far as aesthetics go I would give it a 7 but having all the amenities I would give it a 9.
Don
Brookwood is now called Atlanta-Marietta RV-Resort. We are there right now and it is a relatively nice place. Ditto what Don stated about the place. Lots of conveniences nearby. Close access to interstate 75 and 285 but far enough for no noise. It is right across from Dobbins Air Reserve Base and do hear a few planes coming and going during the day but have not heard any at night.

RE: Flat Panel TV

Here is what I did with mine and have had no problems during many miles of travels over some rough interstates.

Bedroom TV. Screwed the bracket into the metal wall stud.

Mounted 32" HDTV over the opening where the old 27" was.

Mounted on a piece of plywood hinged on one side. Now have much additional storage for DVDs and Games. Can also swing it out to see from the table.
